THE AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATION was a fabulous event this year! Americans in Rome, including representatives of the U.S. government abroad, as well as expats from a wide range of countries, chose this party to enjoy American customs and traditions while in the Eternal City.
On Saturday, July 3rd, from 5 p.m. to dusk we celebrated the anniversary of American Independence with the entire international community of Rome at a traditional home-town style Fourth of July Picnic.
Great prizes in the raffle and free face-painting. A portion of the proceeds donated to the Retake Rome urban clean-up initiative. The US Marines Color Guard conducted the ever-popular Color Guard flag ceremony while soloist Helen Bannigan performed a wonderful rendition of the National Anthem. Traditional American games such as three-legged race, potato sack race, hula hoop and water balloon toss, plus ball games and frisbee. We danced to the sounds of 5-piece, all-live band The Doormats. The Girl Scouts ran craft-making for the kids and the USO helped children write Postcards to the Troops.
We had an American Barbecue all day. Hotdogs and hamburgers, including veggie burgers, sausages on the grill, rice salad, pasta salad, a selection of vegetarian options, ice cream, watermelon, ’Smores and more. Lots of cold water, Peroni beer and Pepsi from our Sponsors, plus wine and typical Tuscan treats from event Sponsor No,vo’lì. Event sponsors Bellezza & Benessere and Open Colonna provided info, coupons and fantastic prizes for our Raffle.
AICR would like to thank all our main sponsors and all the local businesses that contributed a vast assortment of wonderful prizes for our Fourth of July Celebration Raffle!
